Content: The thermophotovoltaic (TPV) generation of electricity is based on the direct conversion of an IR radiation coming from a heat source into electric power by means of photovoltaic cells. TPV is a multidisciplinary technology, which involves different research fields: heat transfer, combustion, generation, selection and transmission of thermal radiation, and photovoltaic effect are the main processes taking place in a TPV device.

Although still in a development phase, TPV has the potential to become in the close future an attractive and competitive energy conversion technology for applications in which small amounts of power or high temperatures are required

The thesis describes the design, the realization and the operation of a small gas-fuelled TPV prototype characterized by a modular design, which allows to operate the system under different configurations. A theoretical simulation model of the whole device is also implemented and used as tool to predict and optimize the system performance.
