Inhalt: This Proceeding is a collection of papers presented at the 5th International Symposium-cum-Workshop for Southeast Asia German Alumni Network (SEAG) held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from August 23-27, 2004. The Symposium was greatly supported academically, organizationally and financially by the German Universities of Marburg, Göttingen and Kassel as well as the Royal University of Agriculture, Cambodia, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ). Its goal was to provide a forum for long-term collaboration among German Alumni in Southeast Asia.

The scientific articles are divided into 3 sessions according to the following three major research topics: (1) Entrepreneurship in an Integrating Rural Economy, (2) Food Security, Technological Change and the Environment, with the subtopics (2a) Forestry & Agro-Forestry Systems, (2b) Plant Production & Agriculture, (2c) Livestock Production Systems, and (3) Changing Paradigms, Policies and Rural Development.

To name only a few, this proceeding is a cross section through topics, like, quality improvement of Sweet-Potato-noodle with Soy products, soil and water conservation issues, community based forest management, onion disease in the Philippines, Black Tiger shrimp excrement to replace chemical fertilizers in Soybean production, Bio-N inoculation, effects of Fresh water spinach and Tuna oil to fattening pigs, Avian influenza affecting poultry industry in Indonesia, improving beef tenderness, developing Bullfrog cultivation, Indonesia’s food security policies, wildlife conservation in Central Sulawesi, developing rural community participation on forest and land fire management in South Sumatra, the social benefit of fertilizer subsidy policy in Thailand, and improving quality of higher education.
