Content: Financial crisis in higher education often emerge when nations for one reason or the other are unable to meet the financial requirements of the institutions. In many instances measures adopted to address the shortfalls often turn out to be unsustainable. Such has been the situation in Ghana in response to the crisis which started almost a decade ago as a result of the national economic crisis. Several proposals on alternative sources of funding including income generation by the institutions themselves are emerging in the face of the declining trend of public funding. The study explores the potentials and limitations of a wide range of alternative funding measures or financial diversification measures that are open to African Universities in general and Ghanaian Universities in particular drawing upon the experiences of many such institutions around the world. The study has determined that the sustainability of a sound financial condition for higher educational institutions depends to a large extent on the extent to which the institutions are able to transform themselves to meet the emerging challenges at any one particular time. The organisational transformation model by Nevis, Lancourt & Vassallo is suggested as a guideline for the institutions to adopt in their strategic planning processes to achieve rapid transformation to enable then survive the financial crisis facing them.
