Content: The increasing intensity of the traffic and especially the growing amount of heavy trucks raises the need for more durable pavement constructions as well as for easy to apply and nevertheless very durable maintenance systems to improve the load bearing capacity of fatigued old structures and/or to preventionally strengthen still satisfactorily but underdesigned pavements to reach the design-life originally aimed at.

One very innovative approach to both improve the load bearing capacity as well as the service quality of the surface are thin overlays made of continuously reinforced
High- or Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fibre Concrete. This kind of concrete is characterized by a steel-like strength of up to 200 MPa and an extremely dense microstructure.
Appropriately designed it is a time and material saving and thus economic method to reconstruct heavily loaded pavements without removing the existing structure.

Based on the results of extensive material related research and on material adequate design principles both developed at the University of Kassel a systemic life-cycle approach has been created to balance the economic aspects of this new pavement maintenance approach compared to today's standardized pavement structures usually
designed for a theoretical service life of 30 years. The technical properties already obtained by the research projects and by prototype applications were used to
extrapolate the initial costs, the long term behavior, the needs and the costs of maintenance and the methods and costs of demolition and reuse of the material at the
end of the significantly prolonged service life. In addition the user related costs were considered e.g. caused by traffic-jams at building sites. Finally technical and economical
recommendations are presented concerning the application of the new longlasting pavements structures made of HPC/UHPC.
